Then my home. Everything. I just wanted to be free. To go out into the world. To stop loving. I packed a bag and threw in two dresses. I took my passport and left. I found him at the airport. He looked so down in the mouth. We both sat on a bench. You said you will quit smoking, I said at one point. Come on, don't leave. Please. We'll try again, he replied. Why the hell shall we try again? It's been twenty years and that's all we do. I told you I'm no wife. You're right. You're really not. But it doesn't matter.

The horse stopped intractable in a glade somewhere in the middle of the Milky Way, put a hoof on his hip and admired the scenery. He had never seen so many stars in one place before. A flash of delight streaked the sky. Aha, so this is what the world looks like when you drop your interests. Cool. If only Master Guguță knew how to get hang of this, maybe he would hold the sheet-metals cheap. Eh, every man with his hobby-horse, he thought, and stuck his snout in a fount of light to take water. He didn't even notice that one of the stars had stuck to his forehead.

In fact, I sold everything. But first it was the Ferrari, the car I dreamed of. You might say: why a Ferrari for a guy who used to herd sheep as a kid? The kid studied Cybernetics and was the father of the first cryptocurrency. The idea of giving unique digital value to everything - currency, stock, gold, was my idea. I bought the Ferrari because it seemed like my portrait, a portrait of success. I had all the beautiful women. The speculators have torn it all down. I wrote my way in the book. Now only smart women like me.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In December 2023, the group has 12,210 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
