I had been awake for some time, but I was still lying in bed, the air had cooled, the fire had long since gone out, but the splinters were in the crate in the shed and I would have to trudge across the yard, through the snow, after them. I was still holding somewhere in the back of my mind the dream of last night and trying to remember it, I must have been reeling in my sleep from some event in my adult life chasing success and total fulfilment, when I heard my mother's voice in the yard, calling to her child from the stone threshold of the kitchen: let's have coffee, you little bird.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In February 2022, the group has 7,950 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes almost daily. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, and Luchian Abel. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
