She knew that her days were numbered, although they had concealed the truth, protecting her. Lord, why did you punish me, what wrongs have I done? Her feet were no longer listening to her, the pain, eased with medication at fixed hours, kept her bedridden. She was looking at her bluish hands and skeletal body and she felt as if they no longer belonged to her. Surrounding her it was white, white, white and infusions. Her efforts to exist a day, and another exhausted her. She couldn't give up, not yet. When she heard his first scream into the world, she closed her eyes for the first time. She won; she'll live another life.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In July 2022, the group has 8,750 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, and Luchian Abel. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
