I slipped down the stairs and woke up at the door to my childhood bedroom. I found a little girl in there, writing on a few pieces of paper which one day would seem so old. She feared the world and hoped that, through writing, she could understand people a little better, or, at least her inability to belong to these times. She couldn't see me, but she stopped for a second and stared at nothing. I put my lips up to the nothing from back then and whispered from the present: don't ever stop writing. She blinked with surprise, unable to find the source of what she was meant to hear.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In August 2022, the group has 9,000 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes almost daily. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, and Luchian Abel. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
