Ioanee, Vasilee, come quick, the fox is attacking the chickens! The embittered neighbours rush there, because for eight days a fox has been stealing their poultry from their yards, then scuttling off into the nearby cornfield, and they start to shoo it, clapping their hands. Măriuța, among them, hugs the corncob-doll with freshly combed pigtails: don't be afraid, we won't be here long. But the girl can't keep up with them, and, frightened by the rustling of the wind-blown tall plants, she falls to the grown. Covered in dirt, with the doll to her chest, her cry can be heard loud and clear: you left me in the cooorn!

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In August 2022, the group has 9,000 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, and Luchian Abel. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
