I had just finished burying the cat for the ninth time when the cornfield broke into a rustle. From the end of the row I could feel someone walking towards me. I gritted the knife in my teeth, carefully, the last time I cut myself badly up to the ear, and raised the spade over my head, ready to strike. The rustling stopped. Please calm down, I'm the girl of the corn, Stephen King's daughter. Ever since the new cross-breed, there's no more need for ritual killing, the harvest is good. I've seen you and I admire you. I've fallen in love with you.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In August 2022, the group has 9,000 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes almost daily. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, and Luchian Abel. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
