I could be sitting warmly before the flame of the oven's mysteries, but no. I could be sleeping with my head on the table, next to the maze porridge bowl, but no. I could be counting the money in the registers, but no. I'd rather stand under the moon, in the middle of the spell that feeds me and which I want to unburden with my tears when there are no rain clouds, and dig with hands among roots until the carcasses that have composted the earth respond. The maze-husk-clothed guards, watching against the arrival of asphalt.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In August 2022, the group has 9,000 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes almost daily. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, and Luchian Abel. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
