Your mom's a queen, not me, you insane bishop. You lied to me, saying that you'll come on a white horse like a true king, pick me up and take me to your magic castle and tower. That I'll be your chosen one for all eternity, wrapped in fine silks and luxury perfumes. You said you had a huge farm, but it's just a lousy garden for you and your relatives to run around like pawns with their heads cut off, since none of you know where your little square begins or ends. You did a checkmate on my life after just one round, you damn fool.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In September 2022, the group has 9,250 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes almost daily. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, and Luchian Abel. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
