After 6 beers, he hit the fridge door too hard against the wall, which came back with force and made him fall. A beer fell too, clunk-splash, glass and splashes and beer foam everywhere. Then the fridge closed. He was huddled where he'd fallen, between the sink and the fridge, blinking fast trying to understand, laughing, watching the drops of blood appear on the back of his right hand. Today he was 16 years old, and no one, no one cared about him, about the red flower left by his hand on the refrigerator, about the laughter of a human standing on the edge of the abyss.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In September 2022, the group has 9,250 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes almost daily. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, and Luchian Abel. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
