Pork's still the best poultry, lisped Gigi, toothpick between his teeth, leaving the grilled chicken scraps to the flies that started to greedily buzz. Cabbage is the best flower, he grinned. On another occasion, on Nela's birthday, he saw fit to buy her a present. Standing in the doorway, with a cabbage the size of Gigi's head in her arms, the woman remained silent. However not long after that, she ran away from home, leaving behind a bunch of leeks and a few words which left Gigi dumbfounded: the prettiest bunch for your next wife. Love, Nela.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In October 2022, the group has 9,400 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes almost daily. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, and Luchian Abel. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
