She was in a room full of mirrors. Some whole, some cracked. In each one, she saw a different story. In the last one she saw a female nude, surrounded by black horses. What mystery could this be, she wondered, and immediately she began to be afraid. Then she tried to wake up, but her body seemed paralyzed. She struggled, unable to open her eyes, as if trapped by unseen elementals. You won't wake up again, one of the horses told her, wrapping its mane around her neck and choking her. The nude's giving birth, she's neighing.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In October 2022, the group has 9,400 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes almost daily. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, and Luchian Abel. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
