The sun was passing over the crest of the hill on her way home from school. Her Grams was waiting for her with hot polenta on that stove that sizzled with worries. The heifer was watered, the corn shucked, the yard swept. \'How was your day, kiddo? I know it ain't been easy for you, but that's what's in store for you if you don't play your cards right. Yeah, Grams. It was good. And she started jabbering about the history lesson, while rummaging through the nest. Neither distance nor poverty could keep her away from school. She dug her first grave the year she got her archaeology degree.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In November 2022, the group has 9,580 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes almost daily. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, and Luchian Abel. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
