Just then, the darkest shadow opened its mouth and pressed it to my ear. It kept saying something but I couldn't understand a word. I felt like he was confessing a mystery to me, but I remained deaf. And then he tore out my heart and started laughing so loud that the birds were flapping in fear. Look, Iwa, he brought you my heart. It's warm. It's better than a goat's. Save my child, don't waste my heart uselessly. Take this doll too, for those who didn't believe in my suffering, may their moment be bitter.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In November 2022, the group has 9,580 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes almost daily. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, and Luchian Abel. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
