The 4 old women were dozing off at the wake. Girl, but will there be sarmale? So whose is it? From 'Culiță the blind', cousin with Plevusca from Satu' Nou. The third opened her eyes. These people are stingy. Serving us chicken and unsalted steamed rice. The other wake was for Puiu living at the corner of the street, he also had hot coffee. The fourth opened her eyes suddenly. I am going to die. Her head fell back. The others glared at her. Wait another hour girl, let's wait for the funeral cake. They looked at her more closely. Really? Huh? Oh. How selfish. All her life she thought only about herself. Do we make the priest aware or wait for the steamed rice?

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In January 2023, the group has 10,220 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, and Luchian Abel. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
