That's what they told me, that my star was misshapen from the night I was born. I was about to come into this world in the snow, my mother hugging a tree in pain because of my coming. I had to pass away first thing in the morning, spitting out a black soup from some other fish life. My mother cried as she was milking her breasts for other hungry babies, for I had clamped my mouth shut in a no. I grew up into such a frail being, that the wind pushes me along the road. And I can only see the sky as a blur. But look at me, make a cross with your tongue, spit in your bosom, I hang around alive under my star and I swear, I love it.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In February 2023, the group has 10,500 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, and Luchian Abel. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
