I'm just so into him. I've read all his public posts, I know what he likes to eat, where he walks, what music he listens to. Before bed, I've made a creepy habit of kissing his profile picture. Those eyes, those lips. If I had my way, I'd go through the display right now. And what would you ask him? You have no idea if he's single. A guy like him is bound to juggle a few women at once. Why ask him? I'll tell him straight up: you would or you wouldn't, I'd still have you. And then? And then what? I hang up the phone and go to bed. It's not like I'm gonna stay up all night.

With honey. Have you ever been bitten by a dead bee? You have to be careful with dead bees if you walk barefoot in the grass, they sting like they're alive. It's raining outside, have you ever walked in the rain without running? She waited politely for him, listening to his star struck diapason. Were you in line just to tell me stories? Next, please. He took the honeyed coffee and came out as red as a turnip. On the napkin, a phone number and a phrase. I feel like you should be kissed, and often, by someone who knows what they're doing.

I have no friends at all, no one can betray me. I don't have a wife, much less someone to run off with. I have no money, so no one can steal from me. I had a fight with my family a long time ago. That's better. At funerals I won't cry, at weddings I won't pretend to be happy. I don't have a house, so no one will burn it down. I don't have a dog either, so it can't be poisoned. Neither have I any hopes that can be deceived. Nor tears, that may drown me. I won't even leave the house, for the wind may blow. I have no illusions, and neither am I disillusioned.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In July 2023, the group has 11,540 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
