My favourite mantra. I have never cared about what the prosecutor or the court thought, about by purple strands, backpack or the military boots that matched the fuchsia Japanese silk dress. I haven't cared that my colourful friendships with people thinking out of the box could offend hostile-hypocritical society, in which I had been struggling to fit into. And then you showed up, with your tiny face all eyes and amazement. And all of a sudden, I began to care about everything, with a painful awakening to the grown-ups' world.

It was her first time seeing him in flesh and blood, and yes, he looked much better than on the big screen. Without any spotlights, make-up or other tricks, he looked like a god who had just woken up: unshaved, with messy hair and a God knows where faraway look, with his Metallica T-shirt and jeans ripped around his knees, the dream of any teenager girl chased by hormones, poetry and rebellion. She didn't think twice. She didn't give a damn about looks, about what others would think, rules or children. Not even about him. The night was hers.

You have been telling me that you wanted to put an end to it, so I showed my surprise: Wouldn't it be better to ellipsis marks? You were so desperate to leave that you drilled the ending so deep right into my heart. I survived and after a period in which you kept your punctuation mark, you showed up out of the blue with a quotation mark out of a game in which one was the eternal blind eye, and the other the useful dedicated idiot. The whole in my heart had clogged, but somehow, the disease spread to the members. No, I don't suffer from sentimental rheumatism, I simply don't give a damn.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In July 2023, the group has 11,540 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
