My name is Tudor Șurubărescu and I'm a robot inventor. This passion stemmed from the need to solve my unpleasant chores. The first robot lowered the toilet seat back down for me, the second was a device for making the bed, and the third was a contraption that picked up my socks from the carpet. I endowed the last one with human emotions, but I caught it in bed with my wife. I'm going to kill it, but first, I need to consult the Penal Code in order to find out how my deed would be classified. Is it destruction or first-degree homicide?

He looked at him and began to bathe him. He dressed him in the new suit and the leather shoes. A drop of sweat, or maybe a tear, trickled over the palms that were clasped on the chest. It flowed onto the icon. It started to rain. He kissed him on the forehead and the cold shook her. It was the end of the road. He lifted his eyes from the notebook and set it on fire with the same match he had used to light the candle. He dropped it over the grave. You lied to me, Pa. The words don't love, don't hug, don't soothe, don't forget, and don't bring you back. I burned them all to ashes.

Hello, police. Please come urgently to C5. There is a horrible racket above banging, screaming, cracking. Please write it down. Yes, they call him Nut Nae. The sculptor, yes. Please hurry. Who knows, perhaps he's killing her. In less than twenty minutes they were at my door. Done? I ask. Well, thank goodness you called us. Do you know what the guy was doing? He was smashing the door using the bust of the Comrade. With a hammer, with an axe, whatever he had in the house. He kept saying: I made you, I kill you! Very well, we'll give him at least five years. Goodbye, take care.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In July 2023, the group has 11,540 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
