When he wanted to get rid of it, he'd climb to the moon. There he walked with his eyes closed, nothing in his way. She'd let the unknown take hold of her and carpet herself on the grey dust, alienated by emotions. Her breathing calmed and then she played with gravity, like a little girl swinging in a seesaw. Up, down, again and again, flying through dreams and memories. When she'd get dizzy and run out of air, she'd stretch out her arms and start floating back to herself. On the way, she would see her days melted, turned to ashes and laid between her and her and she would miss it.

He had always had flashes of memories from another life. He'd be minding his own business, he'd be caught up in chores or sitting around or whatever, and then, jbuf, the moment would come over him where he'd slip away for a few moments, live, feel, and then the episode would suddenly stop. He called them This Place and That Place. Then the transfers to the other world began to be longer, almost in balance with existence here. Schizophrenia, he labeled himself, but he knew he'd just found his way to the universe where he lived one more life.

I am 20 years old. My first holiday as a student, in Costinești, at the cottages, with my girlfriend. We drank champagne and we couldn't stop laughing. I turn the camera towards me. On the other side she looks and says: you're with your girlfriend, at Mace, first outing after retirement. We look over the lens and burst out laughing. No champagne now, same partners, plus she has a boy, I have a girl, students. Only the time that flew by separates us, otherwise we're left, on either side, no regrets, just memories and reunions.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In August 2023, the group has 11,680 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
