In war, the soldiers fall down and never get back up. Young bodies collapse, the present moment swallows up their childhood and the sky encloses. If you pay attention, you notice how dreams and memories, holding hands, come out through the veins that are still filled with blood and bury themselves. You glare up and ask Him who this world you're walking on looks like now. You bite your tongue and advance. You take up your position, squint your eyes, see your family back home and pull the trigger greedily. Every corpse brings you closer to them.

In the small village to which she had been assigned, the children were poor, but hungry to learn new things. They loved her from the start. To them, she was the most beautiful human being in the world. They wanted to resemble her. The girls tied up their hair in the same way that she did, walked and talked like her. They gazed at her admiringly. The boys enjoyed learning and never skipped a class. The young teacher had won their hearts forever. Years later, some of them were doing the same thing. They touched the hearts of those eager for knowledge, passing on what they received.

In our school, the first world is that of the blind people, said the Old Man. They cannot see colours, but their dream is blue. Here is Down syndrome. The land where people smile from ear to ear. Look, the universe of the deaf people. They are dancing. They simply feel the sounds. Through their skin. And here is the planet of the normal people. Living together, they learned to dream in colours, to laugh to tears, to feel the noise. Now I want to send them on Earth and I need you, Woman. I need you to go there first and keep their world unspoiled. You are going to be the Mother

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In August 2023, the group has 11,680 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
