but also in another time. Do you remember that commercial, I am you from the future? That's me, a little thinner and balder. It's cool here. I like that they're feeding me pills. I don't have to take them by myself. They put them in my mouth twice a day. It would be impossible for me with my hands tied to the bed frame. The staff is very kind. It's only that fat lady with glasses that annoys me. She pretends to be my wife. She brings me pancakes every day. I refuse them. I'm sure she put an antidote in them that would bring me back to the present.

Give me the narrow street, I murmur against the window. I look over the sleepless metropolis, extrapolating the verse: and my city where I lived to the full. I am alone in a crowd of other lonely people. We fool ourselves that we have lives, but rather we are sentenced for life, trapped in the New World. The fireworks burst apocalyptically as if aliens were coming, but they're not coming today and the great celebration keeps going. I'm homesick, I can't sleep, and the TV is all rubbish. And a good movie today, paradoxically, Hiroshima, my love.

I don't know what to say, sometimes I get the impression that when Love is born, it is given a little shovel, or perhaps, out of all those gifts from the godmothers, she chooses a little trenching shovel. And in moments of calm when the two are kissing or making pasta, Love starts digging a little at a time, then starts working out to get beautiful legs, so she can get away. Because otherwise I can't explain why at some point they wake up with a big chasm between them and suddenly, they can't hear each other and yell instead. My Love got a swordstick.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In August 2023, the group has 11,680 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
