It was raining when the gipsy camp put up their tents at the edge of the village. It was also raining when Zobar called her to warm her hands by the fire. They made love like crazy. He told her to stay, but she had promised to her mom that she'd be home by dark. It rained the entire summer, as if the sky had burst open. The rain fell, and her belly grew rounder and bigger with each passing day. It was also raining when her father cast her away. When the covered wagons disappeared in the distance, the rain finally stopped.

The girl had always been a wandering soul. She left her home planet when she was little, taking a bit of every season inside four space capsules. She rarely opened them, to make them last longer. As for how she spent her time, she drifted through infinity. However, she soon discovered that there was some autumn left at the bottom of a space capsule, and due to boredom, she opened it. Light raindrops fell from the thick felt clouds over the crimson leaves, and her mother emerged from the drizzle in a yellow dress. Now, she seeks her way back home and hopes to make it on time.

After the downpour, the rain began to settle. We had to cross the muddy field. My wife was behind the wheels and my little daughter in the backseat. Soon after we left, the car began to skid and slide. The kid was scared and started crying. I said stop. She turned off the ESP mode, switched to manual and locked the transmission. The car was now like a little tractor, and we soon got out of there. When we woke up the next morning, our daughter ran to the car, and gave it a hug and a kiss. After ten years, I love it as much as at the beginning.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In August 2023, the group has 11,680 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
