Glod, the son of Mătrăgună, had built it to protect from the birds the couple of plums planted in the marsh. Not even two weeks later a pair of doves had built their nest in its left sleeve. About three to four months later, two jackdaws had moved in its right sleeve, while the flock of robins had filled its hat during the fall. The crows only took shelter in its coat sewn with shiny metal buttons a year later. People stopped passing by it, there were too many fluttering wings and the plums had fallen and became one with the ground.

Daniel Onofrei
The old man came down from the mountain twice a year. At Easter and on Saint Mary's Day. Now, with an undertone voice, he was guiding Ilă, the donkey carrying the full saddle bags. The night had fallen upon them and they hadn't managed to reach any human settlements. He scraped together a makeshift bed under a tree and began to pray. Suddenly the animal started fidgeting and making a muffled sound. The cold wind was whispering to the forest mysteries only known to it. The monk immersed himself deeper in prayer and eventually fell asleep. A sere leaf touched his eyelid, waking him up. The fall was coming.

He was at a party. From a distance she seemed to be shifting her appearance with each step. What a creature, he thought. She must have escapedfrom the planet that has just died. He would have liked to approach her and touch her, but he was afraid. That's how it crossed his mind to grab a microphone and shout: the female with green skin and bulging eyeballs, who one moment seems to be a living being, another a statue and so on. I'm waiting for you in front of the DJ for a dance. The creature stared at him. Her tongue was incredibly long. She grabbed him and turned him into a meal.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In October 2023, the group has 11,950 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
