He found her drowned in a dry bathtub. Exactly as in the similar case two years ago. The prosecutor could feel himself losing his mind, still having no concrete answer. One night, he decided to stay at the crime scene. To sleep on the floor. Nothing special until about 2 o'clock, when he was awakened by a rustling coming from one of the walls, to which he crawled on his knees. The rustling was now accompanied by a diffused light, through which bubbles of soap crept. He tried to touch them, but his skin remained dry.

I take a deep breath in, then let it out slowly. Their hands are flailing like newborn baby giraffes. The autumn sun breaks its rays into small rainbows. Now I know, I understand that in life you have to go exactly where you are most afraid to go. There is the treasure. I could have found it sooner, but I might not have known what to do with it. Now I know, I understand, the main thing is not the glory, it's not the shine, it's not what I thought, but Mommy, Mommy, make us more balloons, please, please.

The mother and the little boy waited holding hands for the green light in order to cross. They hadn't even gotten halfway to the crosswalk when a speeding car hit them head on. Both bodies were slightly pushed into the air and fell onto the asphalt warmed by the spring sun. A pool of blood began to form around the boy's head. His mother's hand had been torn from his on impact. The driver got out and knelt down next to the two. Soap bubbles floated above the scene.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In November 2023, the group has 12,090 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
