She's up the duff. I overheard a friend of my mom saying that. I didn't dare ask what it meant. I soon forgot about it, then tragedy struck. Our neighbour's daugther had moved into a new apartment. She met a rich guy, but he didn't marry her because of his religion. When she got pregnant, he gave her money to see a doctor who carried out illegal abortions. She bought curtains for her new home instead, and sought the help of an old lady. I heard that expression again at the funeral. Maybe it was a sentence to death.

The first to fall in broad daylight, for the entire city to witness, while he was giving a speech was Mayor Gicu. All the party staff saw him collapse just as he boasted about his achievements during his mandate. Heart issues. Next was the landowner and football team owner, Gicu. Stroke. These things happen, you might say, but, on the same afternoon, Gicu, the chief of surgery, and Gicu, nicknamed Asphalt, collided head-on into the same wall. People began to mutter, and they all gathered in the evening under the window of Prime Minister Gicu, waiting in silence.

We hid from the rest of the group in the thickets. My creamT-shirt was covered in cattail fluff. Ah, ah, ahchoo. Damn it, I forgot you were allergic. Does it matter if they catch us? The meteor will strike us anyway. I counted a few more hours. Baby, what do you want? Well, let me tell you. Hm, do you remember when I kissed the mole on your left breast for the first time? Silly you, I thought you wanted to roll a little one first. Nope, take off your shirt and let me do it again. What's in it for me? Hah. A bump, should that rock fall on you.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In November 2023, the group has 12,090 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
