Carmen-Ecaterina Ciobâcă
It is high time I wrote you these lines. I did not love you from the very beginning. When you showed up into my life, I felt your maliciousness. You used to piss me off with your locks of hair, your ruffled dresses and your giggles. You would walk into a room and everyone's mouth would drop in awe. When you stole what I loved the most, I cursed you. I reached the age of wisdom. I don't hold a grudge anymore. Love him as I would have loved him. As for me, sister, since the day you ran away with Igor, I remained the same: an old maid.

She kept telling you that God is not a typesetter that turns around people's lives, but you did not listen to her and left. That was when she died. All people die when you leave them, they wander around and talk, but they are still dead. You should tell him that I could not wait any longer, she told me sighing yesterday and that was all. I barely lit the candle when the tiles fell and went to dust. Don't touch them, so what if it rains in the house? That is where her soul must have ascended, and I am going through there as well.

Amalia is going to live with her mother, and I struggle to make terms with the situation. Her suitcase is half opened. Among the clothes, slightly covered by my Nirvana T-shirt, there is a book. The Giant Turnip, my daughter's favorite story. I feel a lump in my throat. My father used to read this book to me. Is this book cursed? I am talking nonsense. Wake me up when September ends. I answer the phone. Hello. Yes, it's me. I am sorry, I forgot about the biopsy results, I have been extremely busy. Yes, exactly, it looks like a radish.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In January 2024, the group has 12,500 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
