She wakes up early in the morning, brushes her teeth, eats a loaf of bread with some butter, makes a cup of coffee, opens the window, watches the mountains while drinking her coffee, the air is fresh, the sky is clear blue, the fresh snow creaks under her boots, she closes her eyes and imagines how it would have been like if. Nothing. It wasn't meant to be. She still finds herself crying over him. The psychologist? Wasted money. Brrr, she tells herself, closes the window and starts the avalanche. They still haven't found her.

He loved her at first sight. She was barely breathing, lying in an eight-meter-deep crevasse, with her livid neck skin. If it hadn't been a race against time, he would've stayed there and drew her. The Beauty from Rodna Mountains, Horses' Waterfall area. He tore her clothes off and used his body to keep her warm only after they got into the helicopter. When he looked out the porthole, he saw the mountains flying around them. Then he knew. He'd let her mend her broken ribs and then he'd ask for her phone number.

It took us a whole day to gather at the forest cabin from Răcătău commune. We're a group of hikers, alpinists, speleologists, lovers of the mountain. We booked the cabin for Puiu's anniversary and brought food and beverages in our backpacks. The party takes place tomorrow evening. Only the birthday boy has his private room and he will enter it accompanied by a nice young lady, Nina. After a night of sipping Bacchic liquors, stories and sleeping on the forest rangers' bunks, the early morning caught us perfectly trained for the gathering. Nina shows up too. Wearing high-heels and a quilted robe.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In January 2024, the group has 12,500 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
