To end the war between the two kingdoms, Prince Green had to marry Princess Red. As clichés go, the Dragon kidnapped her. Riding a donkey, he set off on a rescue mission. The searching hero got some help too. The Forest Fairy gave him a bag of seeds along the way. Instead of stamina. He headbutted him, pulled his hair, made him trip, pushed him down the stairs. The Dragon was played like a football. He went after the smell. But not in the cellar. In the kitchen. He kicked the door. He saw her. She greeted him with a toothless smile. I've made cabbage rolls for you.

How many? 9. Are they enough? Well, they've asked for three each. So they're not enough. How many have you got? I haven't counted, but there can't be more than 20. You knew they would all come. It's not a big deal. They might settle for two. Some settle for one. I'll give them mine. I'm really not in the mood today. They're too cold, I've got a cold, no high spirits. What, can't you heat them up? Have you ever seen anyone drink a warm beer? What beer? What are you talking about? What are YOU talking about? Have you got a fever? Give me some vodka to warm my brain.

The rough blanket scratched her nose, but she didn't dare look out the window unless she was completely covered. It wasn't the cold in the house that made her gaze freeze, but the dragons disappearing behind the windowsill, the ghosts and skeletons rising from the snow, the drops of water sliding and changing their shape on and on, and the shadow of firs on the ceiling. She was startled by Rex's growl at the winter outside. Then she sank down between her older brothers. They sat like cabbage rolls, wrapped up in the December's end.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In January 2024, the group has 12,500 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
