Listen, where do people's souls go when they die, to heaven? asked the first little girl caught in her father's embrace. How could they go to heaven, do you think our grandma could still see us from there? She couldn't even read anymore. They go to a meadow, decisively answered the second, caught in the other embrace, looking upwards. The soul of the grandmother desperately clung to the edge of the concrete, then slipped through the tufts, bumped into the lilac branch, and barely caught onto the walnut leaf that got in its way. It was going to sit there for a while longer.

It was Friday and snowing heavily. Trucks had blocked the city, and I was stuck in the elevator. The maintenance man suggested I wait until Monday. I had seen enough movies to try the trick with the emergency exit. Paradoxically, I succeeded, but ended up on an intermediate floor like Harry Potter between platforms. The carpet made it look like the hotel from the Shining, a fact confirmed by Danny's tricycle with which I made a marathon of escaping the labyrinth. They found me on Monday, buried in a pile of snow with a suspicious smile on my face.

Vasile, Grigore, and Ioan had known each other since childhood. At 18, they decided to set out on a journey. Many kilometers, with ups and downs. Cheerful and optimistic. At the first crossroads, Vasile met Ana. He took the left path, the other two went ahead. Cheerful. At the second crossroads, Grigore met Ileana. He took the right path. Ioan continued ahead optimistic. But the third crossroads was deserted. Brave and persistent as a child, he decided to camp. He put on his horse glasses. When he woke up, the field was full of mares. He mounted one and told you.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In February 2024, the group has 12,700 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
