We have matched our watches for a few days so we don't miss online meetings anymore. I love it so much. We met half a year ago, at a seminar, and we've been writing to each other ever since. He's sexy, smart, elegant and grammatically precious, in an ungrammatical world, he's interesting and with an elaborate and very cool language. Our virtual dates are hot in preparation for the real one. I'm on time, but he's late. I'm waiting for you in the library, because I parked here and it's too cold outside. Only not there. My wife works there.

My parents were not very well, my grandmother whispered to me, I have a magical house, a bridge and a staircase with many steps that lead directly to the sky with many stars and only one moon. I wanted to be there, who wouldn't? When they started arguing, I took my bag and left. Grandma was waiting for me on the stairs, it was harder than I thought, I got tired after two steps, as if I was climbing a mountain. I forgot to tell you, the stairs are made of books, not wood, you stepped on them, you learned them, that's the magic. Are you on top? Now you can fly.

It was around '90s, after the revolution, when I went to stay at the girls' dormitory of no. 6 Highschool of Tg-Jiu city. Freed from the worries of hard work in the countryside with which I shared my time every day and of the red tie, I tasted the air of freedom for the first time in my life. But as soon as I opened the boarding school door I realized that I had entered a prison. I had to resist in here, so I started looking for a way out of this unreal absurdity. And I found it: the library card.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In February 2024, the group has 12,700 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
