I've often stood in front of the keyboard with tears in my eyes. Dad didn't love me. He would give me piano lessons only when he got drunk. He boasted about me. He used me as a child prodigy. After his death, I met Haydn. I discovered the string quartet and the symphony. No matter how much I wanted to listen to it, the music hid among the forest rustles and in the rain, like an apparition. It drifted further and further away. I searched it through concerts and study halls. I never heard it again, but I can still feel the notes in my fingertips.

Miss Cheshire Cat, could you please, while you float home, leave this envelope to the Hatter? It is his tea time and you will certainly find him in the workshop. But, asked the Cheshire Cat, what did you write there to him, Alice, that the envelope is so voluminous? I didn't write anything to him. I played something for him. And what if, the Cheshire Cat says carelessly, with a sly smile, the envelope opens up a little on the way and someone else hears it too? Don't worry of that, she laughs with relief, there is nothing that he or she can hear. The song is for the Hatter's ears only.

The Puppet Master listened in amazement to the wind of change. On the waters, people were building, without rushing, a ladder to heaven. The fear of darkness was lost in the gorge and a song for friendsmade everyone excited. On streets haunted by nighttime the vanity of glory sought for a place to hide. Money talk, but who listens? The mad man with his eyes closed summoned the crimson rain and it wiped out the beast's number. Your magic has no power here. We are the world, in white silk, and we have opened the gate of the sun.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In March 2024, the group has 12,800 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
