Beloved Cristian, I'm writing these lines in memory of the chills on that Wednesday to Thursday night. Know that I remained just as unlucky. My current boyfriend, Jack, called by friends The Ripper, is more jealous than you. This is actually the reason why I'm writing. I would love to haunt you from time to time, but I haven't heard anything about you since OTV television programme shut down. Are you behind bars? Are you free? Where do you live nowadays? Oh, night is setting over the much awaited answers. Sleep tight, my love. Love you to death, Elodia.

He had been collecting the spare change from his parents' pockets and the money he received for his doughnuts as well, for a full month. Now he had enough to buy a ticket to the city where his friend had moved. One day he got on the bus. The driver asked him who was accompanying him. He lied, saying that there was someone waiting for him at the station. When he got off he thought that the flats were similar. He looked at the picture with Nuțu. Behind him, the street widened. Hello, sir. Is this were Nuțu lives? Years later he found out that Nuțu had hidden the details of the orphanage.

He was homeless, he lived from day to day and paid for a general-delivery to which nothing was ever delivered. Always sad, he never missed a day at the post office, but when he didn't come for a month; I panicked. I felt sorry for him and decided to keep his box, I hoped he was alright and that someone would write to him. After one more month he got an envelope and, since he still didn't come, I opened it. It was from his mother, she told him she forgave him and asked him to return home. I would announce to her that her son is lost but I can't, I want to believe it wasn't so.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In March 2024, the group has 12,800 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
