The one in which somebody shows up and saves this country. He makes it undefeatable. Whatever, or at least makes sure that there would be no more garbage on the fields. Some sort of pater familia or a badass mother. Sweetie, there is no such thing, an old man selling radish by the roadside whispers to me. I didn't believe him. I turn on the TV and find out that everyone's waiting for a Messiah. But he is to be kept all to ourselves and our interests. A tool for the people. What people? The ones that are left, for the ones that are gone don't believe in such things. Great movie.

We walk to the summer garden. I would call it Gloria, mon amour d'antan. We arrive there before it gets dark and grab the tickets. Mom prepared some sandwiches for dad, who has just got back from the construction site. The screen's huge, I'm small and I sit on a bench. Dad went to buy seeds. There's plenty of that, but he knows an auntie selling them in more generous cups. He comes back with full pockets, but we don't start cracking the seeds until in gets dark. That's the rule. The movie starts. All that waiting made me fall asleep. Perfectly rested for the walk back home.

I know that forgiving him so many times was the worst decision of my life. I can feel the regret gnawing at my flesh. Girl, do you hear yourself? He cheated on you, hurt you, stole from you, so what? It's so easy to always blame it on God. Are you for real? You aren't living in the past. You are alive today, now. Take your life in your own hands and get out of my way. You have an entire reel ahead. Empty. Don't waste it. I can tell you this much: the divine sceneries are in vain if the script sucks. Admit your mistakes. Forgive yourself. The only certainty is You.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In April 2024, the group has 12,860 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
