Poseidon rushes through the gate. He throws his trident, rattling the windows. Not good, thought Lenuța, stepping out into the doorway. Why are you barging in like that. I was having a cup of coffee with Medusa. The trident hit her head and you killed about three snakes. You know what happens next. Oh, and don't forget. Heracles left me too. He said he wouldn't do more than 12 labours, even if Olympus fell. Everybody on the set now. Come on, Olympians, you're moving at a snail's pace. You, Leana, enough with the stardom airs. I know, you're always good. The movie is bad.

Out of all the bad movies, the one that changed my life was my doctor's, produced on the cardiac ultrasound machine in her office, more than 10 years ago. After twisting me around and elbowing me in the neck so she could operate the ultrasound sensor, she gave me a harsh, tobacco- and insomnia-related chide. Sadistically, she played the ultrasound film and showed me that my heart was no longer beating, only vibrating, with a pseudo-pulse of 192. Still, giving the results, I think she got the Oscar.

There was no one as a passionate cinephile as Grandma. She liked any movie, as long as it was a movie. Even those played on national television, with Dacians, peasants and communists, but foreign films especially. How happy she was, when videotapes came out. She was happy with any videotape as well, she was never away from the screen, always asking if we had gotten something new. When Lady Chatterley's Lover came to us, all we could do was pre-emptively send the kids to bed. We couldn't send Grandma to bed, but she left on her own after 15 minutes.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In April 2024, the group has 12,860 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
