It was our third date and I was feeling my way through her crevices as the sun lit the moon's surface so brightly I could see the American flag. That light directly hit the windshield of the car in which I was trying to score one. Look how beautiful it is, I hear her say. Yeah, so beautiful, I mumbled while having her nipples in my mouth. Stop. Tell me something nice. Oh moon, oh Queen of the Sea, I said sarcastically, thinking of going for a 69. She got annoyed. Take me home. How you slide on our world's arch. I almost yelled, but the magic had vanished.

The light is constant and strong in the city of infinite LEDs. The starry sky, as described by the astrology books of old, was found upside down in this bright city. That way we have the Big Dipper bar, and up the hill, we have the Venus House in all its infamy. When a disaster struck them, known as the great power outage, the citizens of the city would blindly make their way through the night. A scarred and stringent face now looked down upon them from above. They'd never seen something like that, perhaps because they had even forgot to look at the sky, and at its useless moon.

It's the hardest when I return to my lair, at night. I'm alone, and foreign and far. I'm so homesick I could cry. I clench my teeth and furrow my brows. The tears. The memories. I open my diary and I jot down: I'm craving meatballs with sauce. It will all pass. 5.7 million Romanians live far from home. Why can they do this but I can't? I lay my forehead on the window as I sigh. The earth is getting smaller and smaller and the homesickness is getting stronger and stronger. I count the distance in my head. One light year, two light years, and then I fall asleep.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In May 2024, the group has 13,000 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
