The little girl was lost in the forest. She was hungry and cold, and the tree stretched out its arms to her and covered her with dry leaves. It began to rain, and the mushroom stretched its stem to cover it with its huge hat. The she-wolf gave her a suck and took her to sleep in the hidden cave. In the morning, the bear gave him strawberries to eat and held in his warm fur, and the wise burdock read him a story. Footsteps and human cries were heard. The little girl in her mother's arms, was waving and smiling. Some say she has visions.

It never was. Every morning he left the middle of the labyrinth. Shirt unbuttoned by memories, tie hung by a new moon, losing address every twelfth night. Still looking for me, a voice told him. In debtors' prison the bars come to life, they smell of regret and rot. When did you forget how to live? I do not care. From the maze a hand hits him in the solar plexus. How many thoughts generate an emotion? Let's try anarchy and jasmine on the crust one more time. Of all days raise my wall.

He was spinning in his bare feet, through the fat, uncut grass, wet with the morning dew, with his hair loose on his shoulders, with his white, thin, long, wide open, transparent shirt, leaving his young body shyly exposed to the sun, with its rounded curves: go, Moon, come, Sun, put him on the path, because I have no more patience. For a long time, she rolled down the flowers, laughing until she was tired, then she fell asleep in the orchard, until Brumi, a Carpathian shepherd, came to wake her up with a lick, saying: come on, honey, we're not eating anything today?

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In May 2024, the group has 13,000 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
