It was a story that old man. Mr. Colonel had fought both wars, smoked and drank coffee like a Turk after being a prisoner, and was a block administrator. The mother quarrelled badly with him for uninteresting reasons and, being right, threatened to make and eat his cage. After about 10 years, she started taking care of him, buying him cigarettes, making him coffee and soup every day. At the end of the story, he kept his word. When at the age of 96, on a hot day, the Colonel died, my mother made koliva and then she ate it.

Once upon a time there was a tourist who got stuck in her car on the road. A sinewy shepherd saw her and helped her to repair it. Now the tourist wanted to pay using her body and the shepherd received about three times the payment. After they did what they did, the impressed tourist told him that she is going to marry him and he would offer him everything. He refused, the sheep being dearer to him. Look, he said, I have a brother if you want to marry. But will he be as good as you, she said. Even better. Last year, he put a she-bear down so well that she brings us honey even now, the animal. The end.

I knew, I had received several messages and last night's had been clear: You have 24 hours until extinction, follow the instructions and go to the portal, which I was going to do, but even though I knew I was going to go into another story, the desire to live a little longer in this place that I loved somehow kept me in place, that is, I was walking, but slowly, and as I got closer, my strength was leaving me, one by one, so that when I got there, all I had to do was to put my head through the eye of the portal and with the last of my strength to shout satisfied: Dang-dong.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In May 2024, the group has 13,000 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
