They knew each other since they were kids, but they fell in love in their first year of faculty. He was Croatian, she was pure Serbian. The parents, whom were not only neighbours, but also very good friends, were happy to hear about their romance. They seemed to be made for each other. When he asked her father for his blessing, as everyone does, they threw a big party. Then, everyone went crazy. Walls of hatred rose between them, and love could not find any creak to slide through anymore.

You were sitting on a stone staircase in the yard, reading The Master and Margarita, and I was killing time with a Pulcinella helmet which I was going to use this evening in that show. I approached you and I asked, Being of feminine carnation, do you know how to sew? Yes, she answered briefly and intrigued. Then will you sew this strip to this elastic, it's hanging loose. Sure. And with your skilled little hands you were on it. A success. What you didn't know is that I have been following you for four months. Shh, soon enough I'll let you go.

I watched for a few seconds how my bare feet move across the fluffy carpet in between the sofas. A twinge of courage ran along my spine thinking that you have no idea that I can draw fish with my index toes. Like back in my childhood when grandma used to talk about the miracles in the Bible. What I draw is my secret. You don't know this yet, but you can get to know my body only after you touch my bare soul. Look, I'll leave the bottom of my feet as a collateral this time so you'll know that I won't flee dishevelled. And I don't want to part any water. Ok?

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In May 2024, the group has 13,000 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
