You lie down gently on the couch. Close your eyes, breathe deeply. You are in the shade of an ancient tree, on a sunny afternoon. It's peaceful, nothing disturbs you. Not even the leaves move, nor do the birds fly. It feels so good that you fall asleep. I see a hedgehog. I'm afraid of it, the patient interrupted. Yes, there was a hedgehog, but it hurried away, it was about to miss the train. Are there trains around here? I'm afraid I might lose my legs. There was a train, but it went far away, to relax as well. It's tough transporting hedgehogs.

You press the trigger, inhale, relax, fire, then watch life drain from the body. It's a meditation in itself, because you're there with every fiber of your being. You are the one who takes life. And not by mistake, but because you choose to. In those minutes, you're no longer human, you're the end of the road. And that adrenaline, no drug can give you that, no sexual encounter, no birdsong, no freefall. But you're not ready yet. To reach that level, you must have nothing left to lose in this world.

Gheorghiță Mircea
Goguță would sink into the void whenever he wanted. The fluid of his thoughts thus decanted at least once a day. Meditation had become, after countless studies and practices, the form of relaxation that his consciousness turned to. If, once upon a time, Goober lived in a dichotomous universe, now, Yin-Yang had opened his mind to accepting his inner voice, leading him toward zen, the primordial stability and balance that required no intervention from him. Goguță would do this often, especially when his wife, Goguța, was embracing the orientalist practice of Kamasutra with the neighbour, Mardale.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In July 2024, the group has 13,200 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, Monica Aldea, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
