I didn't get why Grandma had agreed to take a nap in the wooden box in the church instead of sleeping in her own bed. Mom said that Grandma was preparing to leave, but she didn't go anywhere. Each time I called out for her, Grandma would come and sit on the clothes chest from the closet. I sat beside her on the hoover box and quietly listened to her stories. Grandma was never absent. Except for when Miruna was born, she concluded her story, got up, and told me to sit in her place because she would be gone for a while.

I'm providing you with plenty of theory and bibliography in this creative writing course, but just so you know, although plenty of you feel the urge to grab the pen, you'll be doing it in vain because I'm telling you everything that could be written has been written already, there's nothing to add, there's surely someone somewhere in China who has written exactly what you're writing, it isn't like in the time of Balzac or Tolstoy, who had all subjects available, what was the big fuss in becoming famous given those conditions? By the way, I hope you can make it to the launch of my newest book tomorrow.

So, who's got the tax money, asked Doc, all relaxed; or have you paid it already? Pay what?, said Sleepy, yawning. Have you all gone completely mad since this little thing bleached your undies and skins? I didn't know you all to be brainwashed, otherwise, you've got \'em all. The protection money, for the witch; ain't that what we've been working for for half a month? Who was supposed to bring her the money today? Ah, you mean that tax, I reckon it was Dopey's turn. What've you done with the money?, snapped Bashful, all hushed. Six bulging pairs of eyes were watching him. And he was all, mute.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In August 2024, the group has 13,230 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, Monica Aldea, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
