Because of the heavy rain, the show had to be interrupted by the one taking place outside. Among the people who were running to shelter, I saw her. The only colour from a black and white movie. She had a beauty that surpassed the shape of the body. She was shaking like an illusion. I moved towards her and put the coat on her shoulders. Without asking her. She gazed at me with a pair of eyes I had never seen before. And not even then. And when she smiled at me, the evil vanished from the earth. The narrator stayed silent. He sighed deep and long. And filled by the same memory.

Until 5 years old, my parents never had a quiet holiday. I was leaving, eating an ice cream, until the lumps in my throat were swelling and then I'd be in 40°C, so I'd have to rush back. One morning in March, mother picked me up and took me in another city, at a hospital where I was frightened to see some syringes and pliers beside me and a doctor pulling the lumps from my throat. I didn't forget how, amazed and happy, I swallowed a Parfait, 73' model, served with the big spoon from my mother.

Let's go outside for an ice cream, my father told me one day, after he accidentally caught my finger in the door jamb. He was very stingy, but got scared when he saw me crying. I don't remember if it was in a cone or on a stick. What I know is that he got one too for himself and I thought to myself to be such a waste. He said abashed that he would've liked to go back in time. His foolishly worry, those childish eyes, abide due to lack of alternative, in an attractive man's body, made my pain go away and feel ashamed. Forget it, it's to the left.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In August 2024, the group has 13,230 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, Monica Aldea, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
