What star is that? I don't know. If you want, I'll give it your name. Who do you think you are? I'm a man in love and I'm a little God. That was the astronomer who knew the names of all the stars. The star that caught her eye was called CWS2024, but its name was prettier. This guy's weird too, she thought, what must my girlfriend have been thinking when she set me up with him. Listen, God. I'd prefer an earthling. He could've taken me to the club, had a Cosmopolitan, not to the beach to look at the stars.

Yes, it's good here, nothing to say, I'm with my mom and dad, they have work, pretty much all the time and quite often even on Sundays, I have a black kitten with green eyes, I go to school, I get along well with the teacher and the rest of the class, I have good grades, I have friends in the neighborhood. But here, even if at night I go up to the 10th floor of the apartment block, my father took me to the astronomical observatory, I can't find the little star in the sky, which is clearly visible from my grandmother's house in the village. And I want to give it a name: Agurița, like my grandmother.

Did you see grandma? See what, sweetie? There was a big, bright star in the sky tonight. There it is down there on the lower left. Oh, even these glasses don't help me anymore. You gotta see it. It's born now. I knew she'd show up. I was waiting for her. How did you know? Mommy didn't buy me the telescope for my birthday for nothing. Well, Grandma, it's been 40 days since Mom left. You told me that these days she's like an angel on earth, then she goes to sleep in heaven. That's her. My shining star. With gentle name. Hermina.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In August 2024, the group has 13,230 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, Monica Aldea, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
