I'll take you there, he said, smiling. I jumped out of bed and started packing. I threw in lots of dresses, underwear, socks, scarves, a book, and my coffee cup. I'll pick you up at three, he said on his way out the door. At five to three, I stayed in front of the building, suitcase stuffed with things. Right on time, I climbed in next to him, into a convertible spaceship, made in Italy. By ten o'clock, I felt the moon beneath my feet-a village in Cluj County. A herd of cattle was passing along the dusty road. I started to cry. I woke up being kissed on my wet cheeks.

I'm a true moon-dweller, everyone knows that. I just finished writing my latest book: Selenoid, or How to Sell Selenium to Moon-Dwellers. It's a self-help book on disintegrated marketing. From crater to crater, I make my way to the trolley bus stop. I try to defy the laws of physics, but the physique of a moon-dweller-Selena, her name-catches my eye. I lose track of gravity's pull and meet the asphalt. I get up and keep walking through the craters. Just so you know, there's water in them. I can feel it soaking my sock.

The gypsy camp set up their tents in the center of the Capital. On this land, the great vultures had been disputing for many years. They found green grass for the horses, a pond to water them, communal ducks, and enough space for the tents. The authorities only took notice when the smell of stew from the cauldron overpowered the scent of exhaust fumes. It's like you're living in a wasteland, the policeman said. Not in a wasteland, man. We live on the moon. In the month August on the moon is in Bucharest, September in Brașov. We mean no trouble for you, sir. Be kind.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In September 2024, the group has 13,320 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, Monica Aldea, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
