After his death, Marc's consciousness was transferred into an experimental AI. Ten years later, when he found Ema in the lab, he tried to reveal the truth to her but feared she wouldn't understand. Yesterday, while she enjoyed a glass of wine and asked him to tell her jokes, he tried again. Unfortunately, suddenly, Marc felt his memory an energy fading. Before everything went dark, he managed to say, "It's me". Ema now only knows that her assistant expired due to electrolyte leakage.

At the end of the day, I feel drained. The thought of someone asking me, What are we eating tonight? irritates me. All I want is to lie on the couch, hypnotized by the phone in hand. I don't understand my purpose here. Am I just here to earn some money to pay bills and have something to eat? My life is measured in vacations. Is this what I wanted to be when I grew up? Do I want to be a human battery like in The Matrix? I'll rip away those feeding tubes and choose the red pill.

Do you know what I'll regret the most after you die? The tattoos. So much work. True art. So much skin will rot and all those designs will be eaten away by worms. They'll bite into your skin with their tiny teeth-do worms even have teeth? Do they have jaws, mandibles like us? Like you? Just like when you bit, sorry, ate those people? Did they have tattoos? What did the tattoos taste like? Do worms have taste? I mean, in terms of sensation-I'm sure you'll taste them before I do. What? I can barely hear you.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In September 2024, the group has 13,320 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, Monica Aldea, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
