I was blinded by her as soon as I saw her dancing in the club. Her brightness eclipsed my world. Her moves ignored the gravity and made me feel uneasy. She was turning me on from a distance, I admit. The air touched me with its hands like I was caressed by the whole Universe. Her thick lips and slightly wet were humming a melody like she was whispering love-words in my right ear. After that night, I began to have vision problems. My ophthalmologist said that I have something suspicious on my retina, a light shaped like an hourglass that moves sensually.

The sun burned on a cloud-hungry sky. The unbreakable sun rays collided with the two glass globes. The girl finished tending the vineyard and now, groping, she was pulling the weeds from the cucumber's nests along with her father, who was sliding with the help of a bearing plate. The old man had lost his legs in the Z war and he was helping her, he didn't seem to be bothered by work. They were alone. Everyone else had left because of the Shutdown. Some burned, others blind laid with their names inscribed on wooden crosses.

He was awakened by the squeal of an eagle. He opened his eyes frightened and quickly closed them back. The sun seemed to him as big as the entire sky. He took a deep breath, he tried to remember what he was doing there. Yes, I was on the front line. Where are the others? With difficulty, he stood up. All deserted. Here and there a pile of meat was torn by wild animals. An awful smell. Rotting bodies. I want to go home, he thought with tears in his eyes. In my village. with the sheep on the hill, mowing, attending the hora[1]. I miss simple living, just enjoying life.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In October 2024, the group has 13,400 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, Monica Aldea, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
