I, Garfield, am doing that unusual thing-I'm watching TV. Thomas O'Malley loudly sips his Pina Colada. We're lazing around. On the screen, a flashing ad appears. All of cat kind is to gather on the Sphinx's broken nose. Bastet, our protective goddess, is bringing a shipment of fresh arrivals, straight from Mars. I shake off my laziness and knead the blanket beneath me. O'Malley, tipsy, is practicing his Don Juan moves in the mirror. Wow, the fierce, independent, and wild ones are coming. We're both on edge. And we cry. We're both neutered.

Night after night, I pressed my ear to the wall, saw him with my mind's eye, and spoke to him. What are you up to, my favourite alien? In delight, he moved his thin limbs, nodding his huge head. He did a few somersaults and waited for the story. I spoke to him softly about suns and morning stars, comets and meteors, ringed planets, and star clusters. Until he fell asleep. We should give her away; we can't keep her anymore, I hear as I circle the crib. Fools, the baby loves me; we know each other from other worlds, I tell them, padding away on soft little paws.

Smart and tall at first glance, with nail marks in his palms on second, this well-groomed, perfectly dressed man adopted me without a second thought. Obviously, I played a part too-my irresistible, big, shiny eyes made him fall victim to the sway of my charming purr. I had landed on a Wednesday in a straw basket on an African stream. I came from a sizzling, purring planet with the atmosphere of an '80s nightclub. I was sent to annihilate the human race. Happy toxoplasmosis.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In October 2024, the group has 13,400 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, Monica Aldea, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
