Even now, I don't think she was lying. When her Nae left to study Astrophysics, she was quiet for a while, then it was as if she'd become someone else. I listened, fascinated, to her stories about the multiverse and gateways between parallel universes. I was smitten with her. She would lie back on the grass, the buttons of her now-tight dress coming undone so it wouldn't burst, leaning back with her legs open toward me, then sending me to get cigarettes and liqueur. Afterward, she'd take me into the cornfield. She'd blindfold me, kiss me, and disappear. The portal, she'd say the next day. I fell through it.

In the first part, he breaks his nose, just by mistake. She came up from behind and put her hands over his eyes. Guess what? Țuțu got scared, thinking someone was trying to take his bag with glue. He elbowed and broke Cici's nose. Cici wiped the blood off with her fingers. She cried and licked the blood. He, gallantly, handed her the bag, as a sedative. She refused, just for form's sake. Then she snorted loudly. In the second part, Cici does everything for Țuțu to break his nose. He, gallantly, will hand her the bag, as a sedative. I'll win the Palme d'Or.

And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better to be blind in the kingdom of the Lord than to have two sound eyes and be enslaved by the Stranger. For everything that is left for two, serves two masters. Like hands that carve faces, like ears that bend to vanity. Listen to me, your mother, who consecrated you as a Nazarite to the Lord. And turn your eyes away from temptation and idols. For again I tell you: It is better to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two and be thrown into the fire of Gehenna.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In November 2024, the group has 13,480 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, Monica Aldea, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
