When she found out that she would have a brother or sister, in another house, from another mother, Mica hid under the table and cried. She hoped that there, where she couldn't see much of the otherhouse, a spell would happen and the othermother would disappear, along with the unknown baby who would surely steal what was left of her father's love and completely replace Mica. She cried and cried, then fell asleep and dreamed that she hid under the table and got lost, all she had left was a swing in which she was swinging with the fear, above a body of water.

The rain suddenly started, as if the Universe wanted to wipe away the carnage. When they attacked us, the wedding had just begun. I pretended dead and lay on the floor. The village was roaring with pain. I heard them laughing. What else did they want? There was nothing left. I stood still for a while, playing in my head the rhythm of the rain. I smiled. I got away this time. Numb, I got up from behind my uncle. What a big hole is in his chest. I hope she, so beautiful, escaped. I sneaked into the house. Maria, with her skirt up, was staring at me coldly.

Nobody knows about this place. I'm little and no matter how fast I would try to run, they would keep catching up with me. I asked my mom to get me a phone like all my friends have, but she didn't want to, she said that I was too little and that I should play with the kids. It's just that no one plays with me and they laugh at me and they tell me I'm dirt poor because I don't have a phone and then I hide from them. I found a big tree and I read leaning against it. Mom thinks I'm outside and I'm playing and she's not sad anymore. Today I made friends with a kid who says he's a prince.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In January 2025, the group has 13,600 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, Monica Aldea, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
