She was leaving behind all the promises, smiles, and lies. The cold air whistled past her ears, her hair fluttered upwards, her shattered pounded powerfully, so powerfully that she spread her wings, stretched them out, flapped them a few times, and detached herself just a moment before her body would hit the asphalt. The wind carried her above the building from which she had stepped into the void just moments earlier. She spun a few times, cast one last glance downward at what had been until then, and joined the other pigeons.

Normally, we don't remember if we had a past life. But I was in a car with the man who was my husband, and we were arguing, then suddenly I felt cold, and I woke up with a little worm in my beak. But I'm vegan. And now I'm an atypical crow chick. I'm independent. I'm going to eat the broccoli off this skinny blonde's plate. I'm going to blackmail him, darling, she didn't die in an accident, she was sedated by him. Oh, did you kill me? A crow chick attacked me, I'm allergic, darling. Don't worry, you'll be the lover's earthworm, she won't get rid of you. Karma.

I, too, was a cat, once. I ruled an entire kingdom. Servants? Just some humans. I wouldn't recommend them, but I couldn't get rid of them. They had become dependent on me. Often, I would stalk birds. I loved hunting them. It felt like an existential rollercoaster. The adrenaline was at its peak, I would remain tense for hours, I couldn't help but purr with pleasure. I would break their necks little by little. I played with them, gave them hope, then chewed them up again. When they no longer moved, I abandoned them with contempt, a scruffy crow boasted to a fat, neutered tomcat.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In March 2025, the group has 13,700 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, Monica Aldea, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
