Yeah, girlie. That's where I'm headed, because I have a few sins. You? Straight to the tar pit. That's the difference. Does a black heaven exist, though? Of course. That's where the saints with dirty thoughts end up. Flower, spare me with your progressive philosophy, I'm sick of words. I've specialized in science. I got my diploma in science divulgator from yesterday. I can explain anything you don't understand, exactly at your level. And how did you train for this innovative career? An intense three-day course, five-hour master's and a two-day PhD. Not many are capable of that. But, hey, I've got an IQ of 70.

Her name was Lise and she smelled like childhood. She sold me a story about saving the planet, about the future, about how only I, with my investments in green energy, could stop the glaciers from melting. In the room, the light reflected on her skin. The next day, she was gone. My laptop was open. The files had been accessed. I smiled. Lise thought she could spy on me. But the truth is that I knew who she was from the very first second. And, unfortunately, I knew she would end up alone, in a club bathroom, with her eyes wide open to nothing, curled up, cold and useless.

I didn't feel my left leg, as for the rest it was comfortable. The first to come was my mother. She hugged me. Her hands were warm and her face was glowing. Then my grandfather on my father's side appeared. Also cousin Liviu. I was so happy to see him. I'll never forget the duel we had at five years old over Măriuca. Mom, Ana? Sweetie, she'll come later. She stayed with the kids. She sends her love to you. I looked down and saw the white mountain, tumbled, keeping me warm. That's pretty much how it was, the first time I died.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In April 2025, the group has 13,740 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, Monica Aldea, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
